Impolite Company: Episode Five – 2/7/2018 – Meredith Hopping

One of our goals is to introduce you to brand new comics, people just starting their journey towards what they’re hoping is a new career.  Meredith Hopping is in her first year of performing and she’s dedicated her time so far to honing a perfect hosting set at the area’s open mics.  That’s earned her spots on some great local showcases, including Coffee Break with Ken Warner this Friday, 2/9/2018, at Foam Coffee and Beer in the Cherokee neighborhood.

We discuss how Meredith feels about her first year of comedy, the weirdness of comedy competitions, and her fear of the rapture.

Impolite Company: Episode Four – 2/6/2018 – Larry Greene

Larry Greene is one of the hardest working comics on the St. Louis scene.  When we decided a big part of this show would be interviews with local comedians, his name was at the top of our list.

We talked comedy philosophy, his first open mic, Netflix, and comics with identity problems.  There’s also a special message for a key part of our demographic.

Impolite Company: Episode Three – 2/5/2018 – Aaron Sawyer

Aaron Sawyer paid us a visit this morning. Not like, out of the blue or anything. We book guests ahead of time.  We just like phrasing it as if he just showed up and said “Let’s do a radio show!” and we  said “Yeah!”  But really, Aaron Sawyer showed up at a prescribed time in the appropriate place for recording.

Aaron is the creator of Boondoggle, a bi-monthly show at The Heavy Anchor.  It’s a two person sketch comedy show where he and a guest collaborator write, stage, and perform in an hour of original sketch

We talked about Canadian football, how unfunny it is to describe a sketch, Rick James, the writing process, and a lot of other stuff.  Enjoy the show.

Impolite Company: Episode Two – 2/2/2018 – Scott James

This morning we hung out with Funny Bone regular feature, Scott James.  Scott is one of the most casually funny people in the St. Louis Comedy Scene, who’s incredibly helpful to new comics trying to figure out how to get stage time and become better performers.

We talked about the library, learning to cuss, landscaping, and his e-cig.  In  the course of all that, we forgot to talk about the fact you can see him this Wednesday, February 21 at the Funny Bone Showcase, and on March 16 at our live show, Impolite Company, at The Crack Fox.  I could easily have spent another hour just talking comedy with Scott, and I will.

I had coffee today, so I was a bit more on the game, and I gave a special apology to yesterday’s guest, Yale Hollander. Though I did misidentify the brand of pizza sold at  The Crack Fox  (Pro-Tip: It’s Dogtown Pizza, not TJ’s).  Go drink there if you’re downtown. If you’re in Maplewood, go spend some money at The Crow’s Nest!

Impolite Company: Episode One – 2/1/2018 – Yale Hollander

If you’re a regular St. Louis Live listener, you know Yale Hollander from his amazingly effective morning promotional texts, letting listeners know about his upcoming shows.  I decided he needed an hour to promote those shows. I had a lot of fun talking with him this morning.  Go see him host The Improv Shop Showcase this Saturday night at The Improv Shop.

In addition to Yale’s upcoming shows, we discussed food, how tired I was, the lie that is McDonald’s “Open for Breakfast” sign, and restaurants you can’t go to anymore.

Special thanks to Yale for being my first guest on Impolite Company’s morning wake-up hour.  It’s a bit harder than being a hairdresser’s first client, or a surgeon’s first patient, since no one can step in and help when I go off the rails.  Yale was fun and engaging while I learned where the buttons are, where the clock is, and that I should start breathing through my nose. Thanks to We Are Live for letting me play in their sandbox.

Keep listening to how this show evolves into what I think will be a fun look at the local comedy scene, and St. Louis in general.  And tune in tomorrow when my guest will be Funny Bone regular feature, Scott James.  And visit our sponsors, The Crack Fox and The Crow’s Nest!
